Diwali is Now an Official Holiday in the USA

Diwali, known as the festival of lights, typicaly occurs in October or November, depending on the lunar calendar. This year, Diwali will be celebrated on November 12, 2023 and would become the 12th federally recognized holiday in the United States.  More than 200,000 New York City residents celebrate Diwali, which is observed by Hindus, Sikhs, Jains and some Buddhists.

New York City officially declared Diwali a public school holiday in which students will have day off starting in 2024.
